Misfits and Black Mirror

Misfits

The narrative of Misfits is around a close group of friends, this allows you learn about each character and in a way connect with each of them. The series is around 'A group of young offenders doing community service but then get struck by lightning during a storm, and begin to develop superpowers'. Although this sounds cheesy and a bit childish they have made it gripping and down to earth. I feel this show did show how the world would become if we were focused solely on power and superiority, and i feel there was a bigger message around Misfits and that it did showcase how if one thing happened in your life e.g. getting a higher job or winning the lottery you know feel you have a lot more power over things and this is when you start to see the world break down into predators and the prey. I think the best thing that this programme has done was to go back to each offender's past and show how they got to where they are today, this was a clever tactic as it allowed you to try and work out their story for yourself, and then they showed you what actually happened this either surprised you or was your own prediction.
The characters used were also very interesting and each had their own style and personalities, but although you see them in a good light they are young offenders meaning they have committed a crime, showing the youth culture that many would have predicted as many of the roles are the ones associated with crime and disruption. A good example of the predicted fellow in my opinion from the start of the series would be Kelly, as she is wearing the high ponytail which could represent her being highly strung, lots of makeup which from the onset shows dominance but on the inside it could show insecurities. Overall i felt this character was a predicable due to the personality, a little rude, bad language etc. but as the programme progresses you are able to understand why eac character is the way they are and this development was clever but also well connected.

Black Mirror

The narrative of Black Mirror is defiantly different from Misfits and it does not have a continuous character base or narrative, each episode it changes. This is good in some instances that you are able to find more about each subject, but there is no character connection so it could depend on the person watching it if they connect to the series. An example of this is that the first episode is around the power of technology and the internet on blackmailing the Prime Minister, whereas the second episode is around a talent show and the 'Price of fame'. The changes between the episodes is clever because it allows you to see a different viewpoint around our world and truly what is truthfully happening and it's painful to see the reality we have brought on ourselves. Watching this show i felt that the targeted audience would not be me but an older audience or generation as they really did witness the whole thing unfold. I would also be an older audience due to some graphic scenes in the first episode, which would not be suitable for a younger audience. From the programme you are able to see the Black Mirror represents normal people being exploited by society. This is painfully true in the world we live in and that's why this programme really bring the issue to the surface, e.g. Abi in the episode '15 million merits.' She auditions for a talent show being natural and showing her talent but soon society dependance on technology and in this talent show she's goes through a filter till nothing natural is left. I really enjoyed this programme as it showed a harsh reality we live in and i found that crazy to think about.

Overall from watching both these shows and researching I was able to determine some similarities between them both. First of all the obvious that they were both produced by Channel 4. I feel they both fit under the science fiction/supernatural genre but i felt that Black Mirror was more around futuristic event and although Misfits seemed like it i don't think this was around the future other than a few of the scenes, each does show however how the world could change if we were ruled by the idea of power and dependency on technology. This was a true reality in some instances and still could happen in this day and age. I think at the time they both individually came out they hit the market right as there was not a lot like it around so they brought a new individuality. Overall i liked both of these series and i would definitely watch or recommend them to others.
